We’re working hard every day to break the unfair link between family background and future success and give all children the best start in life. Labour values in action, in government.
Just as Keir has said, “It is our generation’s greatest responsibility to turn the tide on the lost decade of young kids left as collateral damage.”
We have made a great start: rolling out free breakfast clubs by ending private school tax breaks, delivering Best Start Family Hubs, and expanding childcare to help working parents get on. These measures are already changing lives.
But we know there is more to do. We’ll share with you the strides that Labour has taken in the last week towards breaking down the barriers to opportunity.
- Our Child Poverty Strategy
Our historic Child Poverty Strategy is an investment in our country’s future and will lift over half a million children out of poverty – the biggest reduction in a single Parliament since records began.

- Investing in the next generation
With my friend Pat McFadden MP, Labour is investing in the next generation so that there is no cap on ambition, and children of all backgrounds have the skills and support to thrive.
If you choose an apprenticeship, you should have the same respect and opportunity as everyone else.
That’s why the Government is investing £1.5 billion through the Youth Guarantee and the Growth and Skills Levy – creating 50,000 more apprenticeships and foundation apprenticeships for young people over the next three years.
This will bring us closer to the Prime Minister’s ambition for two-thirds of young people to participate in higher level learning – academic, technical, or apprenticeship.

- Our National Youth Strategy
Finally, I’m proud that my friend Lisa Nandy MP announced our National Youth Strategy. This will rebuild youth services over the next decade with 250 youth centres and a Youth Hub in every local area of Great Britain, helping rebuild real life connections and tackling the youth isolation crisis.
